[Excerpt from Wild Heart]

Baby season starts in March.

If the baby is over 7”, looks around 1 lb, on its own, not showing any signs of distress (walking in circles, falling over etc), and active it is likely old enough to be on its own. Leave it be.

If the baby is under 7” and is on its own, it may be too young to be without its mother. Sometimes babies fall off their mother’s backs and momma just keeps going. They make a sneezing sound to call out for their mother. Observe the baby for a while and see if it seems to be waiting for momma to return. If it appears to be on its own, you can toss a towel or t-shirt over it and scoop it up. Put it in a box with holes in it that it can’t climb out of and place the box half on and half off of a heating pad. An old t-shirt or towel will make good bedding (just make sure the towel isn’t frayed at all). Offer it warm water but do NOT feed it. Contact a rehabber immediately.

If you find a mother that has been hit by a car, check the pouch for babies. If there are any alive, you can carefully remove them. Grip the baby by the head and firmly but gently pull off of the nipple. Babies swallow the nipple inside the pouch and if you pull from their body you could do horrible damage to the baby. Get them into a box with towels/old tshirts, and onto a heating pad. Do not try to feed them. Call a rehabber immediately!
